Hang Them Up! New Perspectives on Historical Wall Maps Studies
The international workshop Hang Them Up! New Perspectives on Historical Wall Maps Studies, organised by the Italian Geographical Society in collaboration with the University of Roma Tre, the University of Florence, the University of Erfurt and the Institute of History of the CAS, will take place at the seat of the Italian Geographical Society from 8 to 9 October 2025.
The workshop will explore the roles of wall maps in education, politics, and culture from the 19th to the 20th century, bringing together international scholars from across Europe, North America, and Asia. It features a keynote lecture by Martin Brückner (University of Delaware), four thematic sessions, and guided visits to the Forma Urbis Museum and the Fascist-era wall maps on Via dei Fori Imperiali.
In addition to historical and interpretive perspectives, the workshop will also address current challenges related to the preservation, digitization, and accessibility of historical wall maps, highlighting the importance of sustainable strategies for making these large-format cartographic materials available to scholars and the public alike.
