Borders as a Cultural and Historical Phenomenon
The Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Department of Geomatics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering (CTU) are inviting proposals for contributions to the ‘Borders as a Cultural and Historical Phenomenon’ conference. This will take place on Thursday, 12 November 2026 in the ÚTAM Conference Hall at Prosecká 809/76, Prague 9.
Border studies is currently a highly debated and resonant issue in a global context, raising a number of questions across disciplines in current research. Borders can be considered a spatio-temporal phenomenon infl uenced by territo rial-administrative, power, ideological, ethnic, cultural, mental, and other aspects. They arise, disappear, intertwine, and change in perception and, with that, the role they play in social practice. Their existence may be deliberately marked in the terrain or on a map, but we can often perceive them through the prism of different environments on both sides. The conference, whose working languages will be Czech and English, will attempt to outline this complex issue from an interdisciplinary perspective.
