Domestic project

The realms of memory in the shaping of modern Czech society in the 19th and in the early 20th century

Provider: The Czech Science Foundation
| Project duration: 2017–2019
| Project ID: GA17-11309S

The project is focused on analysing the function of the profiled "realms of memory" in space and time, and their importance in shaping modern Czech society. The project emphasizes the comparative approach and the interdisciplinary use of a wide range of tangible and intangible sources in order to capture the main specific currents of historical consciousness, such as differences in opinion between town and country, centre and periphery, and the tension and differences in Czech and Czech-German interpretations of the shared history. One of the main tasks of the research is to clarify the issues regarding the ways in which individual components of Czech society related to the realms of memory, and how by means of the latter they were able to identify themselves and at the same time strengthen their sense of belonging (professional associations, unions, festivities). The project culminates with a collective monograph which will benefit research on the emergence of Czech historical stereotypes and the transformation of Czech historical consciousness.
