The project focuses on modern history and present of the Jewish community in Montenegro, a topic that has received very limited attention until now. It will be based on a combination of historical (archival) research with field research (semi-structured interviews, participant observation). The project aims to reconstruct the "invisible" history of the Jews in Montenegro in the 20th century (especially WWII and socialist period), the emergence of official Jewish community recognized by the state in the post-independence period (after 2006) and contemporary narratives of history and collective identity. Archival research and field research will be mostly conducted in Montenegro. The main result will be a monograph in English.
