Provider: The Czech Science Foundation
| Project duration: 2016–2018
| Project ID: GA16-02046S

The purpose of the project is to analyze the multifold and at times controversial political and public engagement of the poet Ladislav Novomeský in the period 1945–1970. Its main aim is to portray Novomeský as a communist politician, intellectual, ideologist and cultural worker in the context of the changing political and social environment in Czechoslovakia, and to therefore complete the current production in literature and historiography which mainly reflect Novomeský as an artist and a journalist. The study will also provide a contribution to the knowledge of communist intelligentsia, the relationship between intellectuals and the power in state socialism, the development of Slovak education and culture, the Czech and Slovak relations, the phenomenon of the repressions in the 1950s, the origins of the reformist development and the creation of the national emancipation movement in Slovakia in the 1960s. Finally, the project will also focus on Novomeský’s position in the contemporary intellectual discourse. The outputs of the project will be a monograph and a series of essays.
