Moments of great political crises (such as the Bohemian Revolt of 1618–1620) have always created a greater need for information among the stakeholders. They caused intense communication, which was based on empirical knowledge of the ongoing crisis. Towns performed a particular centralising function as ‘communications networks’ in this context. For our analysis we have selected four mid-sized towns from the Bohemian crown lands which were important both during the Bohemian Revolt and the period immediately afterwards: two from Upper Lusatia (Görlitz and Lubań/Lauban), one from Bohemia (České Budějovice/Budweis) and one from Moravia (Brno). We will investigate the early modern communication processes and the intermediality of different layers of orality and textuality by means of case studies. How did these towns react to the challenges of the period (i.e. to the rapidly changing sovereigns)? To what extent were they able to master this crisis? Where did they fail? Did the failure of the Bohemian Revolt have anything to do with communication processes?
