Child in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age in the Czech lands

Provider: The Czech Science Foundation
| Project duration: 2015–2017
| Project ID: GA15-02196S

The goal of the project is research on the position of a child within the society during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age, which has up to now been researched only for western Europe. It is, however, not continuation in polemics with Ph. Ariès or a mere search for evidence of the parents' care and love. The goal is capturing the childhood together with confessional specifics of the Czech lands and their inclusion in the all-European context. The inland development trends will be followed in a broad context of the contemporary educational, cultural, social, legal history. Based on an analysis of hitherto uncovered archival manuscripts and edited sources of various nature, this project will concentrate on: 1) concepts of the childhood in the Czech lands 2) the position and role of the child in the family 3) upbringing and education of children 4) the child and the society, while considering the confessional exceptionality (the Czech reformation and extraordinary confessional variety in the early modern period). The main output: a collective monograph.
