Russian (not only) Political Reform: Reality and Fiction

The conference Russian (not only) Political Reform: Reality and Fiction is organized by the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences – the Centre for Research on the History and Culture of Eastern Europe – in cooperation with the Institute of Slavonic Studies of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the East European Studies Department, The Faculty of Arts at Charles University, Department of Russian and East European Studies The Faculty of Social Sciences and the Czech Society for Slavonic, Balkan and Byzantine Studies. The conference will take place on 9th November 2023 in Čechyňská Street in Brno.

Programme

The conference aims to focus on experts and the wider public alike, discussing the research of history and culture of Eastern Europe, accenting the paradigm of Russian (not only) political reform. The topic is not limited to the political level only. The conference invites for a wide range of historical eras, from the Middle Ages to the present day. The topics of the conference are the economic, legal, social and cultural visions, movements, as well as actual reforms and amendments – both positive and negative. The unifying element is the interest of the state, often colliding with the needs of the society. The Russian (not only) political reform can be understood in the realm of specific visions and steps, as well as unrealised ideas or reflections thereof. Similarly, it may reflect the possibilities or impossibilities to reform the state and the continuity or discontinuity of its development. The conference aims to discuss the main research concept, as well as the particular questions or other important paradigms, methodological approaches or historiographic reflections. Apart from historiographers, the conference cordially invites literary historians, art historians, legal historians and other scholars.
