Monastica Historia VII. Ordensmänner und Ordensfrauen zwischen Karriere und Ordensregel

conference, For scholars
19. 6. 2023 – 21. 6. 2023
Alter Stiftskeller, Klein-Mariazell 43a, 2571 Altenmarkt

The conference Ordensmänner und Ordensfrauen zwischen Karriere und Ordensregel, organized by the Istitute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Diözesanarchiv St. Pölten, will take place from 19 to 21 June 2023 at Alter Stiftskeller Klein-Mariazell.

Programme

The seventh in the series of conferences Monastica Historia, which trace various aspects of medieval and early modern religious life, especially with regard to the area of Central Europe, will focus on the questions raised by the combination of the words "career" and "religious life". In the common understanding, the world of monks and nuns is associated with the more perfect following of Jesus Christ in poverty, obedience and chastity, with a hidden life in a cloistered cloister, or with service to one's neighbour without any earthly remuneration. We will be interested, however, in those examples from history which show us that a number of religious men and women have gone beyond this narrow conception and have combined religious life with the development of their careers, often in key positions of ecclesiastical and secular administration, who have developed their scientific or artistic talents within it, and who have gained recognition for their works, or even used their noble origins or position in the Order to satisfy personal interests and ambitions.
