The borders have been accompanying the man since his first steps on the Earth. They are imaginary as well as real, located in the space as well as the human mind. They form barriers by which the societies define their various ideas and ideologies and political or controlled landscapes and territorial units – regions. The borders of the Czech Republic and its predecessors, the state, land and regional borders, are characterized by a varied level of diversity as regards the national conditions as well as the European and Central European political consequences. They are the result of a long development, but ever since the 11th century, the core of the Czech state has been characterised by relative stability. The views and the scope of issues connected with the borders and potentials for their research are diverse, too. The Borders in the Landscapes offers model examples of some of them.
