The publication was prepared for the 600th anniversary of the burning of M. Jan Hus at the Council of Constance (1415). Its main aim was to trace the changes in the image of the life and work of Jan Hus in the centuries following his death.
The shaping of the second life of Jan Hus essentially begins at the moment of his death; already at that time his image is modelled in two antagonistic forms. At first he is primarily a holy man and a heretic, later a defender of the Czech nation and language, as well as a man fighting against the Germans (including the German university nation) and a man responsible for the decline of the Czech kingdom as a result of the Hussite revolution. In modern times, an innovative image of Hus emerges as a defender of the poor and a fighter for social justice, a man who fought against Rome, i.e. the Catholic Church.
Subchapters of the book deal not only with the fate of Jan Hus himself, but also with the transformation of society and the perception of Hussitism as a decisive chapter in Czech history.
