Among the toponyms – the names of objects on the earth’s surface that are cartographically fixed in maps – a specific category is formed by personal names. Honorific toponyms – chosen to celebrate important personalities – are often the subject of research. The use and the reasons for granting them have changed over time, as have the types of objects named; but in any case they have remained and remain an important testimony to (not only) a bygone era. Moreover, the study of honorific toponyms today represents a point of contact between a number of disciplines: history, biography, geography or onomastics. For this reason, the present publication offers a wide range of perspectives and ways of approaching the issue in a number of chapters.
