This interdisciplinary monograph is the culmination of collaborative work by an international team made up of several dozen researchers. These scholars come from countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well as the United States, and they span four generations. Authors have attempted to look into the subject from a comparative point of view within the context of Central and Eastern Europe. This methodology will enable a deeper understanding of the conditions and the results of research in individual national humanities disciplines that engage with Polish history, literature, and culture. This kind of comparative analysis of individual national conceptions – though it can have its their drawbacks – quite often helps researchers overcome obstacles and limitations, thus opening up entirely new perspectives that lead to original insights into what have been presumed “exhausted” subjects, conventional or ossified models for interpretations, and “definitive” results of analysis.
