In the context of interdisciplinary cateollological research, the castles of the Přemyslid period represent one of the most interesting chapters in the history of castle architecture not only in the Czech lands, but also in the whole of Europe. The state of knowledge about individual sites has developed considerably since the last comprehensive domestic treatment of the subjects, as the researches has made many fundamental discoveries.
In this publication, therefore, the author first summarises the current state of knowledge about the castles of the Bohemian Middle Ages. The first volume is devoted to royal castles, bishop’s residences and the Egerland, while the second and third volumes will investigate the aristocratic castles and place Czech castle architecture in a wider European context.
After introducing the history of castellological research in the Czech lands, the first volume deals with the complex question of the origin of early medieval castles, key elements of the defence as well as administration of the country. The emphasis is put especially on the 13th century, when a number of royal castles were built: some of them in the borderlands, while others served as administrative centres of royal estates, guarded important roads or represented parts of the newly founded towns. The royal hunting castles have not been overlooked either.
