This work documents one of the strategies employed by aristocratic society to preserve its exclusive social and economic status by placing unmarried daughters in institutions for noblewomen. The strategy is examined against the example of candidates for benefices at the Theresian Institution of Noble Ladies in Prague, the most prestigious institute of its kind within the Habsburg Monarchy.
