The largest volume of the AECD to date contains 443 thematic entries, some of them very large. It maintains a polytopic approach, corresponding to the nature of the social, political, economic, cultural and religious history of the Czech/Bohemian state and its population from the early Middle Ages to the present. It deals extensively with central concepts (trade, resistance – domestic and foreign, Enlightenment, patriotism), institutions (municipality, citizen, Olomouc archbishopric/bishopric, parliament), including international ones involving the Czech Republic (United Nations, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe). It analyses history-making war events (the Ottoman expansion, the Fifteen Years' War) and gives characteristics of historical countries and regions (Subcarpathian Rus, the Principality of Opava, the Olomouc, Ostrava and Pardubice regions). The book pays great attention to the problems of periodization of Czech history.
