From Brussels to Bern. Memories of the Years 1993–2002

The book From Brussels to Bern. Memories of the Years 1993–2002 provides a detailed account of the author’s diplomatic employment as the first permanent representative of the Czech Republic to the European Communities, later European Union, in Brussels in the years 1993–2002. It thus reflects the course of complex talks of the Czech diplomacy, which preceded the actual negotiations on the Czech accession to this institution, including their first phase. The book also contains a number of interesting (and previously unpublished) information on the stances of individual European governments as well as the EU administration in Brussels on the issue of the so-called Eastern Enlargement of the EU. The second section of the memories (2000–2002) consequently delineates the author’s activities as an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the finalisation of negotiations of the Czech accession to the EU.
