This book intends to break an established view of one period of military history in the Habsburg Monarchy. Except for several items from domestic literature, the text is mostly based on foreign-language sources and information from collections of the Austrian State Archives in Vienna. Most of the space is dedicated to the use of rail transport, because its development led to the spread of warfare and its effectiveness. The essay uncovers the logistic and communication background of armed conflicts in which the Imperial and Royal Army was engaged in 1848–1914 and comments on penetration of the railways and the telegraph into the thinking of the military leaders of the Habsburg Monarchy. This process was reflected in reconstruction of the Austrian field postal service.
