This monograph provides a brief summary of the basic trends in the development of the Church in the Czech lands during the First Czechoslovak Republic, from the establishment of an independent state in 1918 to the tragic events in Munich in September 1938. The authors focus on changes in political and social conditions, including the development of Czech-German relations. They analyze the institutional structure of the Catholic Church, follow papal policy and Czechoslovakia's relations with the Vatican. They also examine the nature of popular piety, the politicizing strategies of the intellectual milieu, spiritual life, and the basic developmental trends of two other major Christian churches—the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren and the Czechoslovak (Hussite) Church—and their relationship to the public sphere.
