Martin Kučera edited the torso of memories of one of the most important Czech surgeons, professor Arnold Jirásek, equipped it with a critical apparatus and wrote a final review. The memoires very engagingly capture the author’s childhood, his participation in a medical expedition in Montenegro during the First Balkan War, the struggle for a full professorship and the raid on the Prague divisional hospital in February 1945. The book is complemented by Jirásek’s articles about other doctors and the articles about him by his contemporaries. An independent part of the book is represented by the cycle of feuilletons from the Balkan wars, translated from the German original and edited by Slavist Jiří Vacek. In the afterword, Martin Kučera summarizes academician Jirásek’s contribution to the history of Czech spiritual culture.
