Dynasty in Peril! – Kings & Queens 15 International Conference

On Wednesday, 2 September 2026, the 15th international Kings & Queens conference, Kings, Queens and Dynasties in Peril, was officially opened in Prague at the Main Building of the Czech Academy of Sciences on Národní Street.

The prestigious anniversary conference was organised by the Royal Studies Network, with this year’s edition hosted by the Research Centre on Courts and Residences and the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The conference was organised on behalf of the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences by Assoc. Prof. Dana Dvořáčková, Ph.D., together with PhDr. Michaela Žáková, Ph.D., Ing. Mgr. Michal Vokurka, Ph.D., Mgr. Bc. Zuzana Vařáková, and Mgr. David Trojan, Ph.D.

The conference explored how dynasties and ruling families responded to moments of profound uncertainty and crisis. Scholars from across Europe and beyond discussed the ways in which succession crises were navigated, the strategies employed in the transfer of royal power, and the often crucial – and sometimes fatal – role played by women in shaping the fate of dynasties and monarchies.

The discussions continued through Friday, 4 September 2026, bringing together a wide range of perspectives on the vulnerabilities, challenges and transformations that shaped royal dynasties throughout European and global history.
