General Database of the Biographical Dictionary of the Czech Lands

Work on the General Glossary of the Biographical Dictionary of the Czech Lands (BDCL) commenced in 1990 to provide a foundation from which to publish a universal generational lexicon, the aim of which was to provide basic scientifically verified information about the life, activities, and work of prominent figures in the political, social, economic, technological, scientific, and cultural spheres as well as other areas of life in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia throughout history. It was originally established and developed only as a card catalogue containing biographical data on these figures together with a brief description of their occupation and a basic bibliography relating to them. At the end of 2014, the editors of the BDCL decided to publish a general glossary in the form of a freely accessible web portal, which has made additional compiled data available to the public since the middle of 2015. In 2016, the website published the contents of the first fifteen volumes, which are currently no longer available in printed form, and the biograms in them are now available on this website. From number sixteen onwards, other volumes are entered into the database approximately one year after publication in printed form. In the electronic form of the dictionary, errors and flaws uncovered since the publication appeared in printed form are being gradually corrected and eliminated. The entries are also being expanded with portraits and other illustrations.
