22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences
            23 – 29 August 2015 - Jinan, China

Historians gathered for the first time at the International Congress of Historical Sciences (ICHS) in Paris in 1900. Since that year, the congress has met regularly every five years and acquired the reputation of the “Olympics of Historians”. Already the last – 21st Congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands – was attended by over 3,000 participants, which is proof of the importance of historical sciences but also of the interest of people in their own history.

After 115 years, the congress will take place for the first time in Asia, and we hence anticipate that the number of participants will greatly exceed the Amsterdam number. The 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences (ICHS) will take place in Jinan, the capital city of the East Chinese province Shandong and the hometown of the philosopher, politician and statesman Confucius. Jinan is a modern sub-provincial administrative centre spread over and area of 8,177 km² with a population of 6,813,800. For the 72 artesian wells, which are found in the centre of the city, Jinan is called the city of springs  (for more information, see http://www.jinan.gov.cn/).

The Chinese organizational committee places great hope in the 22nd ICHS and anticipate that after the Olympic Games in Beijing it is an opportunity to show again the long history and rich culture of China, but also its current economic and society-wide prosperity. They also understand the congress, however, as a chance given to depict the history and culture of the whole world. They do not hide their ambition to be an international coordination platform for historical research and simultaneously for depicting the history and culture of every country; and therefore they are also organizing a number of activities for simplification of the communication of history and cultures also at the time of the congress.

22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences will take place in Jinan on 23 to 29 August 2015 in the form of presentations of four main themes, thirty specialized themes, twenty-one round tables, nineteen joint and special sessions.

The employees of the Institute of History of the CAS submitted five proposals to the International Commission of the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences, of which two were selected in 2012 for discussion in Jinan:

2. Frontiers, Massacres and Resettlement of Populations (Specialised Theme 12)
(organizers: prof. Lyndall Ryan, The University of Newcastle, Australia
