Political Opposition in Yugoslavia after the Issuing of the Octroyed Constitution and the Position of Czechoslovakia
The following contribution sketches in the political developments in Yugoslavia after the issuing of the octroyed constitution in September 1931, mainly based upon thorough research into sources in Czech and foreign archives and analysis of period publications. It particularly focuses on the activity of the Yugoslav opposition and on the position adopted by Czechoslovakia – as one of Yugoslavia’s key foreign policy allies, as well as a country with which many representatives of the Yugoslav opposition movement had close relations. Another aim is to capture the transformations that took place in Czechoslovakia in public opinion, in the press, and in some of the political parties’ stances on the political situation in Yugoslavia, as contrasted with the official position of Czechoslovakia’s foreign policy formulated and represented by Minister Edvard Beneš.

Key words: Czechoslovakia, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, political opposition, octroyed constitution, parliamentary elections, political and diplomatic relations

The Everyday Life of Czechs in Bulgaria in 1878–1904
This study treats aspects of the everyday life of Czechs in Bulgaria in the years following 1878. Individual sections describe the manner of travel from the Czech lands to the Balkans, the reality encountered there, economic and employment conditions, accommodations and the possibilities for leisure-time activities. In order to shed light on the subject, the author utilized sources from Czech and Bulgarian archives and analyzed memoirs published in books or in newspaper articles. To round it out the author examined monographies dedicated to Czech-Bulgarian relations and to Czechs in Bulgaria. This study elucidates some heretofore unanswered questions relating to the lives of Czechs in Bulgaria.

Key words: Czechs in Bulgaria, Bulgaria, 19th century, everyday life, travel, money, work, accommodation, leisure time

Bulgaria’s Policy Towards its Turkish National Minority 1971–1989
The aim of this article is to describe Bulgaria’s policies towards its Turkish minority in the 1970s and 1980s, analyzing its causes and consequences. The text is based upon the author’s study of unpublished sources and published editions of documents from the Bulgarian archives, as well of secondary literature of Bulgarian and Western provenience. In the first subchapter, Bulgaria’s minority policies in 1956–1971 are introduced because they are important for contextualizing later developments. The main part of the study is composed of two related texts that analyze the assimilationist character of Bulgaria’s policy for its Turkish minority, which reached its high-water mark in the so-called “renewal process”. These subchapters analyze the measures undertaken by Zhivkov’s administration in detail, and then examine reactions by members of the Turkish minority and the impact of the repressive policy on bilateral relations between Sofia and Ankara. In conclusion, the author attempts to evaluate the intentions behind these measures within the context of their time, and to answer the question of whether or not the initiative fulfilled its authors’ expectations.

Key words: Bulgaria, minority policy, Turks, Todor Zhivkov, repression, renewal proces
