CISTERCIÁCI A HISTORICKÁ KULTURA VE STŘEDOVĚKU

MARIE BLÁHOVÁ

The Cistercians and the culture of history in the Middle ages:
The author deals with the birth of written culture, especially historiography, of the Cistercians in the Western Europe during the High Middle Ages. Despite the radical refusal of education and the ban on writing books in the Cistercian Order, its origins go back to time not too distant from the Order's beginning. Particularly, the author follows the Cistercian documents from the Czech lands, which were written at the time when the Order has abandoned the initial strict policies.
Key words: Cistercians, Written culture, Historiography, Chronicle of Žďár (Chronicon Domus Sarensis), Chronicle of Zbraslav (Chronicon Aulae regie), Excerpts from various chronicles, Short history of the cistercians order

DANA DVOŘÁČKOVÁ-MALÁ

Engaged narration. Narrative strategies of the literary-historical works at the turn of the 14th century:
The study discusses the hitherto neglected topic – comparing the testimony of narrative sources, both domestic epics and domestic historiography on the history of the end of the 13th and 14th centuries. It indicates a reflection of the political events from the lives of the Bohemian kings, which appear identically in the domestic German and Old-Czech epics and the same also in the Latin chronicle production. The text also points out that it is mainly the events from the childhood and life of the penultimate Přemyslid king Wenceslas II.

VÝTAH Z ČESKÝCH DĚJIN V ŽITAVSKÁ KRONICE JANA Z GUBENU

LENKA BOBKOVÁ

The extract from Bohemian history in the Zittau chronicle of Johann von Guben:
The Town Chronicle of Zittau is actually the earliest urban historiographical work, which was created on the territory of the Kingdom of Bohemia, to which Zittau immediately belonged until the first decades of the 15th century. It was written down by the scribe Johann von Guben, who kept his chronologically ordered, German language records until 1375. The chronicle has been preserved in the original, or in a manuscript, which was commissioned at the latest in 1395. Besides very interesting (and often unique) information on the reign of Charles IV, it also contains glosses from Czech history, which are written in Latin and placed above and below the actual text. It is precisely to those that the printed article / study draws attention.

POLITICKÉ A NÁBOŽENSKÉ AKTUALIZACE HUSITSTVÍ V ČESKÝCH KRONIKÁCH NA ROZHRANÍ STŘEDOVĚKU A NOVOVĚKU

PETR ČORNEJ

Political and religious updating of Hussitism in the Bohemian chronicles at the turn of Middle Ages and the Modern Period:
The study compares the views of the Hussite period in the chronicler’s works written down in Latin by the direct actors in events (Vavřinec of Březová, senior of the Táborite church Nicholas of Pelhřimov) and in the Czech-language chronicles created and issued in the second quarter of the 16th century in print (the texts of Martin Kuthen, Bohuslav Bílejovský and Václav Hájek of Libočany). Besides the same moments in the works of the Utraquist authors (emphasis of the importance of Hussitism for the history of mankind in its journey for redemption, Czech messianism), it also notices the differences, especially the tendencies to the fictionalization of the events and fears of the disintegration of church unity (threatened by the appearance of Luther’s reformation and the radicalization of Bohemian Utraquism) on the pages of the printed texts.

ČESKÉ DĚJINY VE SVĚTLE STRATEGIE VYPRÁVĚNÍ ANNALES JANA DŁUGOSZE

JAN PETRÁSEK

Czech history in light of narrative´s strategy of Jan Długosz´s Annales:
One of the research option of monumental chronicle epos from cracow´s canon Jan Długosz Annales seu Cronicae incliti Regni Poloniae represents relation between cronicle, or it´s author and czech history. In his rather negative attitude mainly during time of Hussite´s revolution dominated two basic motives – strict accusing Czechs of heresy and at the same time accenting common origin and language alikeness of czech and polish „nation“. Aim of the study is to point out chronicler´s using of this two „plot“ while actualising the view in pre-Hussite period and to create a narrative frame of czech historical „story“ in contrast with history of his own land. Outcome of analysis is attempt of uncovering and introducing narrative strategy which Długosz applied during construction of czech´s issue chapter chiefly in chronological older part of Annales.
Key words: Długosz, middle ages, chronicle, narrative, historiography, Czech, Poland

ŠTĚPÁN ŠIMEK

Chroniclers: The example of the old Czech chronicle Martimiani:
In this article, we explore the possibility to reconstruct medieval thinking of chroniclers. In particular, we focus on the Old Czech translation of so-called Martimiani Chronicle (also called The Roman Chronicle, Chronicle of Emperors and Popes or Chronicle by Beneš from Hořovice), whose Czech translation probably dates to the 15th century. We compare preserved manuscripts and the incunabula mutually while also considering the foreign source texts (German chronicle by Jacob Twinger von Königshofen and Latin Cronica summorum pontificum imperatorumque ac septem etatibus mundi by Martinus Polonus). The resulting textual differences can be most likely seen as products of an imaginative dialogue between the two chroniclers that we describe, sort and explain in the light of the historical circumstances. In addition, we disclose the intertextual relations between Old Czech Martimiani Chronicle and later chronicles (e. g. Václav Hájek’s Kronika česká).

Chronicler’s Emotions:
The article is concerned with emotional manifestations in S1 text, Staré letopisy české (Old Czech Chronicles), where it is possible to study transformation of annals writing into more epic-like form resembling chronicle. In S1 text the chronicler’s subjective view is manifested by depicted events, as well as their evaluation, which in language presents itself by use of e.g. expressive language, figures of speech or unusual composition procedures.
